Sewing is my Passion

Sewing keeps me busy. True. But it's more than that I love sewing. The act of creating something out of nothing is amazing to me. That is why i love crafts.

How to: Beginner's Hand Sewing

Introduction

I still remember the first time i even picked up a needle. I think i was 10, give or take a year. I was sooo facinating by the very idea of sewing. Anyways, I remember poking myself millions of times hand sewing and when I DID get to use a sewing machine… it wasn’t too easy either.

Now I’m not trying to scare you or anything but let’s be honest here. Sewing is a fun hobby but it can be hard especially for a beginner who has NO experience. Lucky for me, I had my mom to teach me. Now I want to return the favor and teach anyone who is willing to learn.

The best way is to learn through hands on experience. That is the ABSOLUTE best way to learn sewing. Sure, you can watch videos or read about it but it’s not the same as actually doing it. You should consider yourself extremely lucky if you have someone around you who is willing to teach you to sew. Trust me; it shouldn’t take more than an hour or two to get the basics of sewing.

Hand sewing

All you need is a needle and thread. You can purchase other materials like for ex. Tape measures, scissors, pins etc... But that’s all you need now. You can find this anywhere. May I suggest a local discount store… you don’t need anything special. First you need to know your fabrics.

Maybe I’ll get more detailed in another post but pretty much how THICK or STRETCHY your fabric is will determine how smooth your sewing will be. Oh and this is kinda common sense ( but I never got it when I started sewing) you want to make sure that the “stretch” is the right way. For example some fabrics only stretch width wise… which makes sense considering the shape of the human body. But seriously you want the look deepy at the fabric.. and the easy way to do it is to compare the fabric your using to say a t-shirt you own. This is how I learned how to tell which side is the front, the back and the grain.

You want to measure your thread properly. I usually think of it as twice the length depending on how big or small my stitches are. Next you want to thread your needle and take your needle through the fabric. If you’re sewing through 2 fabrics then you want to make sure their aligned properly. Also another big thing with hand sewing is the “neatness” if you’re a beginner don’t be disappointed if something doesn’t turn out exactly as you wanted. You live and learn. One way to practice sewing straight lines would be taking a lined pieced of paper and trying to do a couple rows. When you get the idea of it, you want to make sure you have a steady hand and sew a few stitches to get started.

Another thing would be closing the stitch. I mean it has to end sometime, and when it does it could get confusing what to do with the thread. What you want to do is loop the thread a couple times around the loops. This is kinda like back stiching. Then you want to tie it TIGHTLY. There are many ways to end it off but this is the way i do it.

Intro: About This Blogger

Wow! This is my first post ever and boy am I excited :) I always loved reading other people's blogs that I might as well create one myself.

First of all, a little about me. I'm a 15 year old girl from Toronto ( in Canada for you foreigners) with no too much time on my hands. I LOVE crafts. I love anything creative.... anything that works the left side of the brain!

Unfortunately as a first-time blogger I'm not-so-creative. I love writing but I'm more of a visual person so I depend on pictures! So let me just aplogize right now for my crappy spelling and my mistakes. I would love to break into MSN spelling ( LOL OMG NO WAYYY LIK RELLE?) But seriously it's just a learning experience for me to start this blog and the fact that ANYONE is reading this right now is just amazing.

Anyways :) This blog is just going to be about projects or random stuff i do to keep my self busy.
